Back to School

today was the first day back to school. after a 3 months break, my brain starts to think again (like a student).

my first and only class today was Quantitative Analysis of Financial Market. This subject was the core subject of the Master program. using a stepladder analysis, i easily conclude that whoever attend this class, pretty much makes up the entire cohort of the program participants.

by the time the class started, i was in classroom with 50 people and not a single Australian student (in appearance at least - read: no white Anglo-saxon). And 20 minutes into the class, one white male student entered the class room and sat at the far back end corner. and i was like… hooray! finally… one white student. dont get me wrong… i just found it weird.

sure enough in my undergrad degree, having a 50% international students (or at least Asian looking students) in a classroom was a typical sight for commerce student… but, to have only ONE in a group of 50 is just a joke to me….i wonder what the poor boy thought in his mind as he was entering the class? Am i in the wrong class or better, am i in the wrong country??

think about it, imagine if you are in your home country, going to your university and found yourself the ONLY native person in the class… and no, im not talking about some language class or culture class, but a core subject for your course!!

oh well…..

anyway, the class went well (i think), apart from the usual first lecture hickup (where the projector doesnt work, and your lecturer just realised that his new computer doesnt have a cd drive, and he burnt all his teaching materials in a CD, apparently he claimed that the University stipped him off the luxury of CD-Drive). Michael was his name. At a glance, you would thought that he was a male model. I could see the glowing eyes of all the female students as he took the stage…. (right, dont get the wrong idea). He is a lecturer in RMIT, and because of the specialised nature of the course, only few lecturers can teach it (and so he claimed). He took the class for the past 5 years in melb uni, and teach here every Monday…..

and i saw Madeline today at the commerce lab. as i took my seat, somebody screamed my name. i could see everybody at the lab was staring at me…(well, i was the one with a shocking face worn on my face)…Madeline was my project manager for Project Managmeent subject last year, by far one of the best group i have had in IS (apart from my usual group). i didnt really think much about me doing Master program, still not used to it, i guess… but Madeline gave me this ‘curt’ comment, ‘You are doing a 800-level subjects??? You have grown up, boy!’. I was embarrassed. Coz two people next two me were doing their timetable for their first year statistic subject…they gave me this sad unapproving how-could-this-small-boy-already-doing-master-i-cant-believe-he-enjoys-rotting-in-uni- look… my face was as red as an extra-boilt lobster… i just smiled at her….that moment, for the first time this year, i felt soooo old and rotten in this uni….i felt really out of place….. anyhow, we promised each other to catch up….

ok.. that was my first year moment (or more like 6th year moment or 7th year if you count trinity which was taught in uni)…. how was yours???
