the case of Corby and Bali Nine

2005

Australian media has played the hype well to bring the issue of Corby and Bali Nine, who are currently facing the court over drug smuggling allegations in Bali, Indonesia. It all started with Corby and the perceived ‘innocent’ amongst Australian. The anti-Indonesia sentiment over the case is also running high, underscored by the ’shocking’ conditions of Indonesian jail, ‘inefficient’ court system and of course, the troubling death penalty that is by law imposed on drug smugglers.

Without a doubt, being ‘female’ has helped Corby to advance her cause to garner sympathy among the Australian public. She looks innocent and doesnt fit the characteristics of typical drug smugglers, thus she must be innocent. If you are caught carrying prohibited drugs into a country where the law dictates that if convicted the maximum sentence is death penalty, any person, regardless of nationality, gender or affiliations must be tried by the court system in that country. Therefore, facing the possibility of death penalty if convicted. Its as simple as that. I know that Indonesian judges do not normally sympathise over the ‘plea’ of the defendant. Simply because they cannot be emotionally attached to the case. They have to remain detached, impartial and deliberate according to the evidence presented and the law. And even if a person convicted, there are still many appeal avenues that can be sought.

I do not want to argue about her innocence. this is not what this post is about. it is more about the hype that Australian media has tried to generate over the entire case. Especially over the ‘death penalty’ issue. I, myself, do not believe in death penalty, whatever the case is. But it seems to me that Australian public in general, agree and disagree with capital punishment according to their convenience. In this case, they feel that death penalty is immoral, tragic and unwarranted. Few recall the strong stance of Australian public in supporting the death penalty during the trials of Bali bombing. How ironic? It seems to me that it’s ok for indonesians who committed a crime that carries capital punishment to receive death penalty, but its not ok for Australians.

How about being consistent for a change?

when was the last time you remember that God has defied the Pope??

CNN.com – Pope ‘prayed not to be elected’ – Apr 25, 2005
Benedict, 78, said he hoped to spend his last years living quietly and peacefully.

“At a certain point, I prayed to God ‘please don’t do this to me,”‘ he recalled. “Evidently, this time He didn’t listen to me.”

the politics of politics

2005
04.23

there are many times when i am in the positions to argue with the so-called “right-wing” and “left-wing” povs. but why the label? people tend to forget that this type of politicking is neither justified nor verifiable. life is so complex that it cannot be divided into two main streams. well, not according to them. apparently, they can divide them into so many other divisions: social conservatism, neoconservatism, compassionate conservatism, classical conservatism, socialism, social democrat, liberalism, progressive, and god knows what else…..

given in the past two years, my social circle has been inundated with ‘left wing friends and views’, i have no choice but to argue with them from the other side pov. but it is not for the sake of arguing. merely, developing the belief system that our society has already imposed on us, prior to our births. even so, i have always been ready to admit and concede on many grounds my povs on certain matters. they didnt want to concede, because they cannot justify why they are wrong. but the so-called label of ‘right wing, conservative, bush supporters, and even confused:P’ stays with me. im not whinging. i just want to make a casual observation of how things are shaping up among the young people, because they will be standard bearers of what the future will be.

the notion that if one argues strongly from a right-wing view, then they must belief in all the right-wing arguments or povs (or vice versa) is completely mindblowing. This makes politics of politics like a teamsport. people are willing to support their so-called ‘team’, even when they are wrong. i dont want to go as far as ‘labeling’ them ‘blind devotion’, not just because it is as old as time, but because they are smart, intelligent, engaging and open minded individuals.

the paradox of labeling can not be clearer than ‘if you agree with Bush on one thing, you must be right wing, you must be on agreement with him in all his beliefs, you must vote Republicans, you must support the war, etc etc – otherwise you dont know what you are talking about’. how silly is that?

in any debate, the use of language and the choice of words you use will define the whole debate. you will find however, that many people who argue about ‘choice’ neglects other things that require choice. yet their choice to use the word ‘choice’ is misleading if not exagerrating to the point of trolling. take for example, the whole ‘left’ argument about ‘pro choice’, but where do they stand on education or pension?? how is it that government control over those will create ‘choice’ for private citizens?? or even the ‘right’ argument that ‘war is a necessary evil, especially in human pursuit of freedom’. if evil is bad in any case, how could it be necessary?? wouldnt you say that ‘dictatorship can be a necessary evil’ to bring about order in a society?

ironic isnt it?

perhaps our extensive usage of ‘labeling’ is ultimately, for convenience. but this elaborate use has taken a new meaning. people are attaching certain sentiments with certain words, be it negative or positive connotations. many people forget (or neglect) that it is by itself: divisive, pointless and does not advance the quality of any arguments.

lets call it a quid-pro-quo (or is it a ‘tit-for-tat’). no more labels. and the politics of politics will be much better.

officially 23

i feel a moral obligation to write about the day when i offically turned 23. it has been a while since i last celebrated my birthday. the next birthday celebration may well be when i turn 30. that sounds really old (Adrian, dont scream!).

it is in fact just like another day. i didnt really feel special about things that are happening around me. nor did i feel oblige to ‘entertain’ or ‘please’ myself.

last night, however, was truly memorable. it has been perhaps the most rewarding and revealing experience. i will remember this day.

thanks for those who have sent me your best wishes.

does size matter

2005
04.17

ok… this is not the typical post about the you know what size…

im talking about the size or more appropriately, the length of your name… would it be possible that the title that will be put behind your name after you finish tertiary education(s) will be lengthier than your actual name… so far i have acquired BComm, BIS (Melb) and currently working my way through the Master of Financial Management. After that, i could imagine myself doing CA and CFA. And i do want to do an MBA. Call me a nerd or whatever… but i could really really imagine myself doing that.

So, based on that education path i envision, i could foresee that my name will look like this:

Tedy Gunawan, BCom, BIS, MFinMgmt (Melb), MBA (Harvard), CA, CFA

wow… that looks really really really long…. hahhaha… i thought i should write it down for an amusement…but this is really really amusing… well… i wish i could write that… this will take years and years and years…

La Mala Educacion

2005

i was just talking about how routine my life has become. when i went to work to day, i was determined to change.

for a start, i didnt have any work at all. all those newsletters have been sent out yesterday, and membership has been slow coming. mostly, because it is still school holiday. after about two hours in the office, i decided to sign off and catch a La Mala Educacion in Nova. There were about 8 people in the entire cinema. I had the entire row for myself!

It was a well directed movie. Considering i have no expectation at all – the last time i went to see a movie in the cinema was about 4 months ago… yes, thats how long it was. considering that Australian past time hobbies is cinema, i am an ourlier and pretty much a disturber in the statistic.

I made a mental note to catch The Interpreter. Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn are in the movie. It’s released today. I’m not a big fan of both. The only attraction for me is the fact that this is the first movie ever allowed to be shot in the UN building. That’s all.

p/s who says that Melbourne doesnt have coffee bean. Today i saw a new one open on Grattan Street. i took a picture of it (prolly will upload it later). But in my class, Cindy told me that there was already one open next to BMW showroom. hmm….. i didnt know that….

routine sucks

2005
04.14

i do apologise for my continuous slacks in updating this blog. i thought this month would be easier, but NO!

i hate routine. my life is a routine now. every night i sleep around 1am (thats if im lucky…..it used to be 11pm.) and have to get up by 7am the next morning. Day in day out, all weekdays are the same. My outing dont typically finish before 9pm. By the time i reach home, im to tired to do anything! So much of socialising…..

And weekends are just gone case. Saturday which used to be my favourite day has to be ruined by group meetings for assignment. Dont get me wrong, i like the people in Saturday’s group meeting (ok i lied, i like 2/3 of the people :P ). But they just take away the normal Tedy’s day. i dont have those days no more. grr~!

i have always questioned, what do i want out of life. this is not a life to me. definitely not. i really miss home now. i want to go home…. hahaha… (after all those four years of resistance, now im starting to appreciate what life back home would look like)… there is a small ‘but’ –> i want to travel first… and Europe is top my list by a mile. Vatican City is a definite MUST. (but looking at my credit card statement –> btw, this is my new way of living… off credit…i wish i dont have those debts and start saving more for my eventual travel or lack thereof).

Kill Wil

After church, i went to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to see Wil Anderson in Kill Wil. He was damned funny. I do not want to reproduce all his jokes here, but they are top notch. I had a great time.

In the spirit of the new month, i wanted to see what kind of viewership this blog attracts. Awstat gives me this stat broken down by country:

apparently, the viewership was down by 200 unique visitors. i must be that boring. haha.. yes, indeed. i shall try to improve the stuff i write on. in my on defense, i must say that it has been a hectic month, barely had time for myself. but hey, im adjusting.

by the by, kelvin koh has a new blog! this is a free ad for his new blog. visit it here. Congrats!
