unexpected email
12.30
i received an unexpected email from Yuki by accident a couple of days ago. apparently he is now in south pole doing what he loves best…. the telescope stuff…i can never understand fully as im handicapped when it comes to physics…i know he wants to be an astronaut and i hope he does…
anyway.. he is visiting australia after his south pole’s posting and probably to melbourne. it will be good to catch up with him after more than 3 years… we did the skype call earlier today, but given the outdated weather satellite down there, we had trouble communicating….he promised me to bring some snow from down there hahha even though he doubted it would be a successful venture..(apparently he tried that last year!)
oh.. of slightly surprising in nature too, i received another unexpected sms few hours after the midnight mass. i didnt know she still did remember me… but i restrained myself from replying after such a bad incident this year… some things are better left as it is…
closing the year
12.29
2006 was full of surprises. In the midst of all the joy, sadness, anger, love and pure silence, I want to think that i have cemented another layer of foundation to achieve what i aspire to be. For some corners are completely unfinished, perhaps untouched, the lack thereof were mainly contributed by my human weaknesses – procrastination, selfishness and for being passive.
This will also be the year when perhaps for the last time, I can ever call Melbourne home.
As daunting as it might be, I want to believe that I have made the right decision and taken that leap of faith many of my peers have crossed ages ago.
There are many individuals i should thank for making this year a memorable one and for sharing it with me.
My appreciation will not be complete though without special mention to you-know-who-you-are who has made me a stronger person especially in the last month or so.
For that, forever I will eternally be grateful.
defying the Pope
12.28
in his Ubi et Orbi, the Pope issued a familiar message: don’t let this Christmas be another one symbolised by the commercialism. i have defied him. in my defense, it’s been nearly 1.5 years since i did major shopping and Boxing Day Sale was too tempting to miss.
prior, i had a great Christmas lunch in St Francis with over 50 people around. You would expect Turkey to be served but instead you have familiar asian dishes like rendang, fried beehoon, steam rice and alike. after all, it’s dedicated for international students who can’t celebrate with their families.
back to my Boxing Day experience, we started the day with a compulsory brekky and rushed immediately to the City Center. I have never woken up so early before to do shopping, only to be beaten by over-enthusiastic buyers who seem to be grabbing everything within sights.
the funniest thing happened when we made our way to Chadstone (parking is just unbelievable!). In one of the stores, person A who is part of our group (i shall refer to him as such to avoid embarassing him and the code of silent will hopefully still be intact!), was interested in getting a nice shirt. He discovered that the shirt is the odd one out coz there was no sale tag on it, whereas everything else in the store were on sale. So he asked the sale attendant, and she confirmed that it was not on sale. Dissapointed, he then made a 15 minutes effort to scratch a sale price tag from other items (it was one of those sticky one written by pen) to put it on the shirt he wanted. So there he was, a $179 shirt became a discounted $80. Luckily for him, 5 minutes later, he found the same clothing article hanging with the sale tag on it. And the sale price was $69!! We couldn’t stop laughing. Good thing he didnt pay for it first. He enquired the same sales attendant, and the only thing she could offer was a shrug and told him that omission might have occurred and $69 was the correct price. Besides, it would have been on the computer…..
I nearly blew off my credit card limit when i overspent than what i budgeted for. But i guess, it’s all worth it now even though i still have a little bit sense of regret. Indomie for the next one month is a real possibility!
And only today we did The Queen. It was a crossover between Doco and Movie. Quite slow but good insight to the HRH reaction in the drama unfolding after the Princess of Wales’ death. 4 out of 5.
p/s The recent earthquake in Taiwan has cut off the internet’s international connection in Indonesia. My aunt just told me that it will be a month before it will be restored to normal. She can now only surf the local sites. No MSN, no Hotmail, no Yahoo…. It seems that websites hosted in Indonesia cannot be access from outside too. My indo news sites are giving me the unreachable error messages.
Update: apparently, the problem is more widespread to most Asian countries…banks and financial markets are also affected.
Damien Rice at his best
12.25
My mates who went to Cairns earlier this month have particular liking to Damien Rice’s old single – The Blower’s Daughter. I haven’t listened to the song since Closer’s debut but has renewed my interest ever since they kept humming them and playing it at every opportunity available.
Damien Rice is such a great artist and The Blower’s Daughter showcases his unbelievable vocal.
But apparently i have yet to see his best. Imagine him singing The Blower’s Daughter and did a cover for the infamous Radiohead’s Creep…
The result is an astonishing unbelievable genius melody….
p/s I can only get hold of his 2003’s performance in Pukkelpop Festival…The 2006 Concert in Singapore’s version is un-loadable in Youtube. He’s coming to Australia in Feb 2007 too!
To top it off… you must also watch the combination of his Cold Water and his cover for Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah
repent
12.21
so i did my confession yesterday. twice a year is a norm for me – one before Easter which is compulsory and one before Xmas. This time i only had 5 volumes with 20 chapters each. I felt so great – as if i have no more sins..haha.. as soon as i finished telling my mates, i let go one swear word at the stupid driver who was impatient and horned at us.. oh well….the irony!
the punishment was quite lite for me.. only one cite of Our Father. not bad…
i’m now fully ready for Xmas. i attended the Xmas carols last week. i loved it. but nothing will beat the Midnight Mass. since i’m not on rosters this year, i will opt for the service in the Cathedral. have to be early to reserve good seats….cant wait cant wait..
i love Christmas!
The best aunt in the world!
12.20
OK Santa came early this year for me… my aunt (who is the best aunt in the world) has decided to fulfill my evergrowing wish list. I have officially crossed Tag Heuer Carrera from the list (very satisfying i tell you).
Thank you Soei Ie.. you are best!

Asian Crisis II?
12.20
It was Black Tuesday for Thailand’s stock market as it plunged as low as 18% before closing down 14% lower – the worst fall in 16 years! The impacts are felt throughout the region with most Asian stock markets shedding 2%.
Is this the start of Asian Crisis part II? The panic selling is precipitated by Thai junta’s ruling of Thai bath restriction – forcing many institutions to hold 30% of the investment for at least a year in the country to restrict capital outflow from the country. Little is known why such a draconian measure must be taken. But the effect is clear, trading in the country had to be suspended intra-day to limit the sell offs – the first in its 31 years history! Out of 481 stocks traded in SET, only 8 posted gains, 13 unch and 460 posted losses.
Tomm will be an interesting scene to watch in the financial market!
Update: it looks like the ‘disaster’ was only temporary…and today the markets have rebounded….thank goodness
