past vs future

when i received a postcard from a friend currently in Rome, i couldnt hide my excitement. but beneath it is a message that resonates within:

“It’s really a ‘closed’ & ‘aloof’ and ‘out-of-touch’ church scene. Clinging to the past and afraid of the future!”

Like so many facets of life, the Catholic Church proud of its tradition but caught in the midst of the greatest advancement of human civilization. people who are uncertain about the future will only retreat to the things they know well. isolation and seclusion is what define and confine them. unfortunately, unless it’s ready to take that leap of faith to embrace the future and be the lead actor and agent of change, it will always be seen as the great barrier – where the only play it can yield is in defense.

my uncle is comin to town

when the latest newspoll was out today showing unassailable lead that Rudd has over Howard, nothing is more apt than Laurie Oakes’ comment in Sky News: “The lame duck is meeting the dead duck” – a pretty ’spot on’ reference to the imminent arrival of Bush to meet his ‘man-of-steel’ friend.

if you were around town, the security operation and precaution is massive. dustbins are covered in black plastic bag taped with police lines. security fences as long as 5km cordoned off the northern part of town. police presence is felt. it’s not far removed from a police state.

are they necessary? perhaps. terror attacks in Australia, as many have said, is not a matter of will but when. the next few days will be interesting news and political cycle. 21 leaders in one place when so many stickin world issues are at play – the timing of this APEC meeting is uncanny.

long overdue

it’s been a while since i last wrote. i find solace in keeping ideas sorted out in my head rather than blurting them as i used to. this is bad. not because i’m afraid of what might have been transcribed, but my goldfish memory is a good reason why i have to keep my blog alive.

for the past few months, i have caught up with people whom i thought i will never meet again (because i dont even know where they are). Mike was one of them. all thanks to FB – of course.

the next few weeks will be interesting. Yvette sent me a message yesterday about the crazy checkpoints in Srilanka just so she could meet with her UN supervisor. I replied that it’s no different here. Pretty much a police state with fences erected everywhere in the city. Driving is quite a nightmare but i wont even start. How i wish i could get out of town next week – bar the ’stupid’ CFA course.

i must stop being complacent. because this kinda feeling makes you lazy. sometimes, being relaxed could be a thing you used to justify. but i dont think that this should apply. but hey, you’re pretty much talking to a guy who thinks that sleep is a waste of time.
