defying the Pope

2006
12.28

in his Ubi et Orbi, the Pope issued a familiar message: don’t let this Christmas be another one symbolised by the commercialism. i have defied him. in my defense, it’s been nearly 1.5 years since i did major shopping and Boxing Day Sale was too tempting to miss.

prior, i had a great Christmas lunch in St Francis with over 50 people around. You would expect Turkey to be served but instead you have familiar asian dishes like rendang, fried beehoon, steam rice and alike. after all, it’s dedicated for international students who can’t celebrate with their families.

back to my Boxing Day experience, we started the day with a compulsory brekky and rushed immediately to the City Center. I have never woken up so early before to do shopping, only to be beaten by over-enthusiastic buyers who seem to be grabbing everything within sights.

the funniest thing happened when we made our way to Chadstone (parking is just unbelievable!). In one of the stores, person A who is part of our group (i shall refer to him as such to avoid embarassing him and the code of silent will hopefully still be intact!), was interested in getting a nice shirt. He discovered that the shirt is the odd one out coz there was no sale tag on it, whereas everything else in the store were on sale. So he asked the sale attendant, and she confirmed that it was not on sale. Dissapointed, he then made a 15 minutes effort to scratch a sale price tag from other items (it was one of those sticky one written by pen) to put it on the shirt he wanted. So there he was, a $179 shirt became a discounted $80. Luckily for him, 5 minutes later, he found the same clothing article hanging with the sale tag on it. And the sale price was $69!! We couldn’t stop laughing. Good thing he didnt pay for it first. He enquired the same sales attendant, and the only thing she could offer was a shrug and told him that omission might have occurred and $69 was the correct price. Besides, it would have been on the computer…..

I nearly blew off my credit card limit when i overspent than what i budgeted for. But i guess, it’s all worth it now even though i still have a little bit sense of regret. Indomie for the next one month is a real possibility!

And only today we did The Queen. It was a crossover between Doco and Movie. Quite slow but good insight to the HRH reaction in the drama unfolding after the Princess of Wales’ death. 4 out of 5.

p/s The recent earthquake in Taiwan has cut off the internet’s international connection in Indonesia. My aunt just told me that it will be a month before it will be restored to normal. She can now only surf the local sites. No MSN, no Hotmail, no Yahoo…. It seems that websites hosted in Indonesia cannot be access from outside too. My indo news sites are giving me the unreachable error messages.

Update: apparently, the problem is more widespread to most Asian countries…banks and financial markets are also affected.

crackin….

the second installment of miff for me is a film by Jason Reitman, ‘Thank You For Smoking’. It’s a sold out event and imho, easily ranks in the top 5 movies i’ve watched in the miff. i definitely want to get the DVD of it, which wasnt due to be released until October 3rd this year.

We were also presented with a short film, ‘In God We Trust’, prior to the movie, by the same director. It’s a crackin movie, putting a reality spin on how our life is measured up in points. Good points will send you to heaven and negative points will send you to hell. If you don’t have the chance to watch it anywhere, not to worry. A quick google of the movie led me to this AtomFilms site where u can watch the full 15 minutes of the movie.

Click here for the link and u must definitely watch it!

miff is on

my fourth miff’s adventure started with a very interesting doco, Deliver Us From Evil. This doco puts the human face on the victims of Catholic priests’ abuse while the children are on their duty of care. It’s quite disturbing especially to see a father who was so distressed learning about what her daughter has gone through. Unfortunately, through no fault of his, he has turned away from God. A powerful scene from the movie was when he said he no longer believes in God while her daughter still a devout Catholic, cried.

i’m looking forward to 12 other movies i have picked under my mini pass.

there’s a new show coming on to NBC this fall: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The line up include Matther Perry (from ‘Friends’) and Bradley ‘Josh’ Witford (from ‘The West Wing’).  And guess who was the creator of this series??? None other than Aaron Sorkin (Adrian, you forgot to mention this part!!)…. Cant wait… cant wait…

hooked

i’m currently enjoying the free internet connection by Samsung at the KLIA. Let me tell you that it is almost true that every single flight taken with any indonesian airlines would be delayed. Mine just got delayed by 30 minutes.

Anyway, last night was the eventful dinner ‘reunion’ at hooked (Saw’s place). there were many muoss and non-muoss people from around KL came down to The Curve. i guessed the number of people attending topped the one we had in Melbourne. i wondered how many would come if i organised one in Jakarta? :P Anyway, the moral of the story is we want to schedule times to go around South East Asia together. the details are yet to be worked out (it might take years….oh well).
plus there are plenty of Melbourne alumni thinking of returning back to Australia either for secondment/internal transfer, changing jobs and futher studies. its interesting to know that after a couple of years, people miss melbourne and want to start a live there…..

ive got to go now coz my flight has just been called…. thank you to all the people who have been extremely hospitable especially Nurul, Gorilla, Zamil and Jelita (even though she is in Melb, she is my walking encyclopedia!!)…. i will definitely return to KL on holidays trip rather than tagging along a business trip like this……

My $300T has been revalued to a mere $30b…. crazy! Everybody is selling his/her holdings…. I don’t even recognise the market anymore!

gear up for the WW’s live debate

2005
11.06

this Sunday (US time), Vinnick and Santos will square each others off in a much anticipated live debate for the WW – the first live episode ever. there will be two of them, one for each of the West and East Coast audience (yes, you heard me right, two versions!). Apparently, they have received extensive training on debating strategies. So while the live debate is scripted, you can expect some exchanges that are unplanned.

hopefully this will raise the now faltering profile of the WW (partly due to ABC’s Commander in Chief, featuring the first wom*n presidency), so that Fox will renew the WW into the 8th episode.

Vinnick or Santos? We shall see.

Why Indonesians have to produce more babies

The Jakarta Post – An Indonesian bears $600 in debt

The fact that one in five Indonesians still lives on less than US$1 a day is made even gloomier by the fact that every person in the country — including those extremely poor and even newborn babies — already has nearly Rp 6 million (US$600) in debt to shoulder.

Such a sad, but true reality was unveiled on Monday when Minister of Finance Jusuf Anwar told the House of Representatives’ Commission XI for financial affairs that Indonesia’s outstanding debt through this year’s first quarter amounted to Rp 1.28 quadrillion (some US$128 billion), or 52 percent of the 220-million population’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Let me apply my extensive knowledge of economics to resolve this issue once for all.

The main trust in any result oriented solution would be to ensure that future generations (i.e. unborn babies) will eventually be free from debt or at least have a lesser debt burden.

There are two things that the government can do:

1. Enhance the debt scheduling management to ensure that debt reduction program would be able to substantially reduce if not eliminate the debt by 2010.

This is quite unlikely to be achieved especially knowing that nearly half of the debt is in foreign currency and the volatility of Rupiahs would hinder the pace of this program.

2. Encourage Indonesians to produce more babies.

This is a practical reality as it is Indonesia’s greatest competitive advantage. By having more babies, we can ensure that the debt level that has to be shouldered per person will be drastically reduced without the help of foreign intervention (yes, there are enough productive males and females in Indonesia).

So, I rally all Indonesians to get behind the country and produce more babies!!

The ultimate weapon against men

‘Penis flytrap’ on sale – World – theage.com.au

An ordinary South African woman prompted to action by the high number of rapes around the country this week launched a weapon against a crime to which grandmothers, infants and little girls often fall victim.

Dubbed “the penis flytrap” by South African media, the plastic and latex device in the shape of a condom is designed to fit inside a woman’s vagina. It is inserted and removed with an applicator as with a tampon.

In the event of penetration, a razor-sharp network of “teeth” with which it is fitted becomes embedded in the man’s penis, causing severe pain.

Once attached, the device can only be removed surgically.

the ‘cool’ thing about this devise is its selling for only 1 Rand (AUD 20 cents).

I was just chatting to Shan and he told me exactly the same thing i was thinking:

imagine if u had a girlfrend and u pissed her off…and then she did that as payback…

yes indeed…. i can only ‘imagine’!

The Crazy Frog

2005
06.15

This world has gone crazy….the news report has confirmed that the Crazy Frog ring tone has beaten Coldplay’s latest Speed of Sound to the top of UK chart by 3 or 4 copies to one!

Originally created by a Swede, the tone was popularly used for the famous Insanity Test. It’s a test requiring you to stare at Formula 1 picture with a straight face while the tone is playing in the background. If you laughed, you are legally insane. Click here to test whether you are legally insane or not…

Now back to the original ring tone…. this reminds me of the numanumaei/dragosta din tei craze few months ago, as i reported in this post….Except this is 100 times more famous.. and 100 times more annoying!! Its possibly the most annoying sound in the world!!

Click here to view the flash file of the video clip! (I warned you… its annoying the hell out of me!)
