First Workin Day in 2004

2004
01.06

I didn have sleep yesterday to start the first workin day in 2004. Went back to MUSU, settling all outstandin matters as well as meeting others… Most of the operations are under MUSUL now and the Interim General Manager seems to handle the current situation well…

I also went to NLC National Office meeting up with Sharon, NLC staff, workin out what to do in the next few weeks and, synchronising our thoughts together….

Today i will have national office bearers meeting at 1.30…it might be a long meeting and i havent really prepared all the materials yet… oh well… few more hours to go….

On another note, Britney Spears has filed for an anullment after her crazy marriage at Little White Chapel over the weekend… was it a publicity stunt? who knows?? but one thing for sure that it was a clear breach to the sanctity of marriage… how could idiots like her (who might be rolemodel for millions others), do some kinda stunt like that?? Oh well… its Britney Spears… anythin could happen!

The little lie becomes a Big lie

OMG, i just received an email from the President of the Union……and here is my response in red:

Dear Student,

I write to you to give you an update on proposed changes to the structure of the Melbourne University Student Union (MUSU).

As you will be aware, much attention was recently given to allegations of corruption and fraud within the Student Union. Ernst & Young were engaged by the University to investigate such claims. After months of investigation, Ernst & Young found no examples of fraudulent or corrupt behaviour by any office bearer of the Student Union. Have you ever thought about them not disclosing the allegations yet???

Despite the hype, claims of a Victoria Police investigation have not eventuated given the findings of Ernst & Young.

On the basis of these allegations – since found to be false according to whom??? you?? oh well, how am i not surprised
- the University promised to ‘reform’ MUSU on the back of headlines in The Age newspaper.

The ‘reform’ process called for students to make submissions to a working group. University appointees to the working group have admitted not reading the student submissions. The ‘consultation process’ was an absolute and total sham. Thats because you dont get you want, and you dont feel important enough???

The consultation process has also deliberately shelved a report prepared for the University by respected consultants. It seems that when these internationally renowned consultants proposed a different structure to the University, they were told their services were no longer needed. another misrepresentation, were you sleeping then??? what said in the meeting was, the new board will look into whether external help is needed, it is not up to the working group!

Despite disregarding the views of all students, in the same time period, the University has developed its own corporate and privatised ’student organisation’ solely owned and operated by the University. i think the students have spoken Scott, the student organisation as it exists today has incompetent people in it. to have reform you need radical change. unless of course, you have other motives?

In changes to be rushed through the University in the coming weeks, while all students are sitting exams and engaged in study, we will see student control over student affairs removed – forever. ohh… finally you are speaking about conspiracy??? who were the one interested saving himself, rather than having important discussion in between meetings. your constant SMS during the meeting is definitely despised by members of the group

The $12 million student budget that MUSU currently administers is dedicated to not-for profit activities such as clubs & societies, entertainment, theatre and the advisory service. unfortunately, these are being ruined by individuals in the union… sigh…

In the coming weeks, the University will turn student services into corporatised operations, lacking in student input and control. The role of the Union is to provide students with essential welfare and cultural services provided by students for students. This is something University bureaucrats will never truly understand, their priority is not students, it’s the University.
With everything the Union is meant to provide and represent, about to be stripped away from it, your only student representative body is about to be left gutted and pointless. What do you mean??? it has already been stripped….. from what it should be…..The University cannot maintain the ideals of a student organisation, nor truly promote your interests because they are often the problem. You pay over three hundred dollars a year through your Amenities and Services fee good point… have you ever asked yourself how much student money has been spent on your credit cards???, this fee is meant to be used for your benefit, not the University’s. nor should the fee be used for ‘other’ purposes

Despite paying the highest Amenities and Services fee in Australia, student services will now be required to charge students even more with the University importing its own massive bureaucracy to administer student services and money. well.. too bad… you cannot control the ‘election’ of hopefully to be genuine student representatives

Student services in 2004 will be inaccessible and irrelevant Let see in a few months time.. who is right? your conspiracy theory???. The services students have worked so hard for over the past hundred years will be outsourced to University bureaucrats in the next week who are obsessed with squeezing the last dollar out of students to prop up their own inefficiencies. comparing them with MUSU… OMG, hypocrite!

While the newspaper has got its headlines and the Vice Chancellor has savaged student control, students, however, are to be left without adequate representation and services in Scott’s dictionary, adequate means ‘i have the majority control’ or ‘i am the chair’!.

A Union stripped of money and services will be unable to protect, represent and provide for students of the University of Melbourne It hasnt been anyway… what are you talking about??? the ‘rebirth’ of MUSU??? give me a break… Have you ever asked your office bearers on how many universty’s committee meetings they have been attending through out this year alone???? i will be surprised if you hit a double digit in your counter!.

I urge all students concerned for the fate of their Union to join our campaign to Save The Union I thought some students have already started this…. now you want to join in too??? please ask them how to save the union.. and you will be surprised that two of you will have different agendas of ’saving’ the union. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be publicizing the University’s corporatisation of the Union to current and future students.

You can help and join the fight by simply replying to this email today to Presidents.Office@union.unimelb.edu.au.

We need your support and we need it now! How i ever wonder, who is ‘we’

Yours in Union,

Scott Crawford,
President

election result…

2003
09.29

election result has been declared provisionally…..IA lost on most office bearer positions, even though we staged the strongest campaign ever in history. Polling 20%, doubled in any election. We got 4 council spots by ourself. that is a good achievement. Not majority, but who cares. we always like to be minority and forever would be. BUt like how i have told the caucus, i will be responsible for all this…… and this perhaps would be the end of it. The end of my involvement in IA. I learned what past people told me, dont run it. It doesnt worth the pains and troubles. 2 years for me is enough. Hopefully the young generation will learn it and wont run it after this year.

I have been appointed as the Acting Gen Sec of the Union (even though for only three months, perhaps a consolation price), lots of things to do.. apart from my study.. and my other commitment in other student organisations.

But this would be my last year. Next year is to focus on real world. Re-work the H1s collections and be a good student. New york is where i am planning to go. Interviews over there would be costly, hopefully, my savings and some top up from my parents would be able to help me go there…..

All my friends who are working there have been asking me when im coming over… soon.. just a year and a half and i will be on my way….But uni here is not flexible.. so it would be difficult to get away from study and do interview.. but im sure uni would understand the circumstances…..OH yes, my friend told me that some of them arrange for video conferencing interview… that should be okay for big companies….maybe i can do it from Sydney or even Melbourne….

Well… three months to go and i will be steady again. Patient is what it takes.. and till then, keep trying and good result will be on its way.

election is over

election is over. that was taxing. now the counting is being conducted. waiting for election results to be declared provisionally. there have been many defects in this election and we might have lost the election before it even started. every single year, the election is always settled in court. i dont see any difference for this year…

meanwhile, school is out for two weeks mid semester break. lots of asignments and group projects as usual…..

yesterday, we went to court. this was adjourned from last monday. we brought the President of the Union for serious misconducts over a series of meetings he held in a single day, which resulted in him being able to control the council and executive. but, knowing that there is no way on earth he could win this, he decided to settle out of court. we got our exec back. the consent of court order was then signed. and… the worse thigns of all, union will pay for thousands dollars in legal expenses. what a waste of students’ money.

carsten, my german friend whom i met in berkeley, was visiting me for few days. he has returned to sydney and i think tonight, he is heading back to UK.

last sunday was chia chia’s birthday. couldnt bring myself to wish her happy birthday. i know she wouldnt pick up or answer my messages. further, it would just ruin it. especially since she is happy now. will text her one month from now. she will be furious i suppose, but i hope she understands.

messy union

wow…. i didnt realise that it has been quite a while since i last updated my blog. yea.. i have been extremely busy.. just a recap of what has happened:
-i was in adelaide early in the month for a conference
-student union was and is still in a messy shape
-student union election is coming, and thus my time is mostly dedicated for internal restructuring as well as external liaison for the group we represent
-my sis just came over (and thus my conference was cut short apart from some political drama in union). she started school.
-i am also working casually as a mentor for new international students.. the pay is good, 18 an hour, so cant complain
-timetable for next semester is out next tuesday and school starts next week
-meeting, meeting and meeting everywhere, i barely have times for myself now.
- i bought new furnitures and other household appliances as my housemate moved out last month and thus 1/2 of my apartment’s contents.

what else??
for the next one week, i will be busy with my work, uni stuff and most importantly, my union involvement. this is the week where every political parties (ours is an apolitical organisation) in the union will consolidate themselves while trying to do some preliminary negotiations with others, gearing up for the election happening mid-september.

truth and lies

the truth is what you believe. but make no mistake, truth has life in itself. no matter how you tried to cover it up, it will eventually emerge itself to be seen by the unsuspecting eyes. many truth are covered with lots of lies. lies that made u confuse whether the truth is the lies, or the truth itself. walking along this thin line is extremely dangerous. it acts like a boomerang. if u play with it and distort it, it will eventually come back to u. the harder u throw, the harder and faster it will hit u back. in the pursuit of truth, the true defenders often more than not, get sacrificed. but this is the price of truth. and i am willling to take it as far as it can go. coz i believe that the truth has life in itself.
