Verizon Cents

2006
12.11

Adrian beat me to this post, but i think it deserves another mention not only because it is now the top rated post in youtube, but also due to the sheer stupidity of the people in verizon’s call center for their inability in differentiating $0.002 and 0.002 cents.

George who now set up a blog dedicated to ‘fighting’ this, seemed to have a lot of patience in explaining to various customer representatives of Verizon about the issue. If i were him, i wouldn’t know how long i would have lasted.

This is the part when i found it really amusing:

G: Well, let me just start out with a basic question.

M: Okay.

G: Do you recognize that there’s a difference between “point zero zero two dollars” and “point zero zero two cents”?

[pause]

M: Point zero zero two dollars?

G: Do you recognize that there is actually…

M: …and point zero zero two cents.

G: Yes, do you you recognize there’s a difference between those 2 numbers?

[pause]

M: No.

and even the Floor Manager got really confused:

A: What do you mean .002 dollars?

G: [big sigh] Okay, I think I have to do this again. Do you recognize that there’s a difference between one dollar and one cent?

A: Definitely.

G: Do you recognize there’s a difference between half a dollar and half a cent?

A: Definitely

G: Then, do you therefore recognize there’s a difference between .002 dollars and .002 cents

A: No.

G: No?

A: I mean there’s… there’s no .002 dollars.

G: Of course there it’s.. it’s two..

A: There’s .002 cents is what you’re quoted, and that’s what I do show that you… you paid, or that ya know, you’re paying for the kilobyte usage.

G: Okay. [sigh] I don’t.. I don’t know a better way to express this. .002 dollars is the same as .2 cents.

A: Okay. Well how would you… What would .002 dollars look to you?

G: It’s point…

A: Obviously, a dollar is “one, decimal, zero, zero” right? So what would a “point zero zero two dollars” look like?

G: I don’t know…

A: I’ve never heard of .002 dollars. .002 dollars, it’s just not…

G: This is just… this is just math we’re talking about… this is…

A: …not a full cent.

G: That’s right. And…

For the whole recording you can hear it from here:

and here’s the full transcript.

After this phone drama, he did put in a written complaint and here is what he got:

UNBELIEVABLE!

K2 update

2006
12.10

i have upgraded my blog to a new theme with a K2. you will immediately notice a different look as well as two other interesting features: (1) Rolling Archives – you can scroll back and forth at the top of page to see older posts and (2) Live Search – where search results will be displayed almost instantaneously as alphabets are entered in the search box to form the keyword.

i must admit that there are limited styles currently available for the K2 and given that there is only one style with my favorite colour as the background, i had to ‘imitate’ the style adrian used to dress up his. unfortunately, the blue doesn’t display well the rolling archives bar so i had to settle with green at this point of time.

another interesting features which is included is the way in which modules can be created and arranged using AJAX on the sidebar. This makes it so much easier for me to update themes without having to play around with the default template!

Google gobbled up YouTube

2006
10.10

so the big news of the day is the recent price tag of US$1.5b that Google paid in acquiring YouTube. There has been rumours for the past month or so that this was imminent. On one side, YouTube is strapped of cash but with 50% market share of online video while Google has enormous resources and lagging behind YouTube.

So, it all makes sense? Doesn’t it? With about US$10b of lazy-idle-cash sitting in its warchest, what better way for Google to spend it?

See below for what the cofounders have to say about this recent development:

X’mas Wish – Blackberry 8800

2006
10.07

Adrian knew my recent saga in wanting to have a gadget that combines all functions from Palm, Phone and Blackberry. The only problem with current models, they all have trade-off between design, function and fashion! On the techie front, they either have bluetooth or wifi..but not both…
My must-have device should have the following:

  • Color: BLACK
  • Design: Slim, not too bulky like dopod or iMate – with QWERTY
  • Techie: Quad-band, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.0, GSM/GPRS, EDGE
  • Speakerphone
  • if possible a Blackberry

I have been dissapointed with the range of Blackberry devices recently… until Adrian emailed me the link to a forum speculating a Blackberry 8800, with these specs:

Quad-Band: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS, EDGE + Wi-Fi
Email
Phone and SMS
Corporate Data Access
Organizer
Wireless Internet
BlackBerry Maps
Trackball, ESC key and Menu key
Integrated earpiece and microphone
Integrated speakerphone
Bluetooth v2.0; headset, hands-free and serial port profiles supported
Polyphonic, MP3 & MIDI ringtones, vibrate, on-screen or LED indicator
Embedded RIM wireless modem
Supported by version 4.2 or higher
Ultra Thin
Full QWERTY keypad
Large 320 x 240 screen
Full multimedia feature set
Possible on some versions of the 8800 (Camera – 1.3 mp, 5x digital zoom, flash and maybe even video recording)
Media Player – audio and video playback (Built-in streaming*)
stereo headset compatible.
64 MB Flash, expandable memory (Micro SD)
Great phone experience w/ Advanced noise and echo cancellation
Voice activated dialing, speakerphone, Bluetooth 2.0

To top it off, there’s a black colour version!!!!!!

Man… im in heaven!!! If you dont know what to get me this Xmas… its easy.. 8800!

writely…now spreadsheet

2006
06.07

only months ago, we were excited by Google’s acquisition of Writely..a server based Word-type application which will change the way people write and save documents forever… now while still in limited beta testing mode, Google once again attacked the core business of Microsoft with the overnight launch of Google Spreadsheet. It appears that Google knew how to defend its online presence best –> the best defence is to attack. While downplaying the release as ‘complementary’, it will definitely upset Microsoft, already set back by the late launch of Vista and Office 2007.

Google Speadsheet will allow users to collaborately edit documents online with chat options too. What a collaborative tool! Gone will be USBs and sending large spreadsheets in several versions which annoy me most.

the question is what’s next? server based OS? it soon could be a reality. very exciting!

Google Calendar

2006
04.13

Google starts the Easter holidays with its release of Google Calendar! Its interface is very similar to Gmail and many of its features are similar to Yahoo! Calendar. You can quick add, you can share your calendars, you can invite and RSVP, and soon-to-be-integrated with Gmail, it will even recognise events mentioned in Gmail.

It uses iCal based file format but you can easily import CSV files into it. Unfortunately, for still-loyal user of Palm like me still have to wait on further development for seamless integration with .dab based files. I bet it wont be months before this is achieved. Yahoo!Calendar already has this as permanent feature in addition to its Yahoo!Intellisync.

I was waiting patiently for Mozilla’s Sunbird to develop, but it still discriminates against Palm user. I hope this is not the case for Google Calendar. My Tungsten C feels lonely enough.

I have yet to try this, but in the mean time, i could possibly import the dab files into Yahoo!Calendar, and export it into CSV files, which is to be imported back into Google Calendar. And vice versa.

Another feature that is important in any Calendar program is ToDo list with due date, which is yet to be included in the Google Calendar.
The popular iCal format that enables people to share calendars is what driving this format to be adopted by Google. It is no surprise that i found Melb Uni Big Dates when i searched for Australian calendar under Google Calendar.

Simply amazing!

backup

2005
10.15

i remembered the day i lost all my digital files, the backups and the backups of the backups.

a couple of days ago, jelita lost hers.

lots of us expect our super machines to work the way they always were. but it is a superficial belief.
they always don’t and they fail at times when you don’t expect the most.

imagine all those documents, music, pictures and emails evaporate before your eyes. you can try recovery service, but at the cost of $300.-, not only it’s prohibitive, the chances of you getting them all back is also slim.

we take for granted our system. for that we will be punished severely. at least i have, and i hated every moment of it.

so, when was the last time you back up your files?

eBay + Skype = lethal

2005
09.12

i used to be involved in a case competition team analysing eBay’s then potential acquisition target – Paypal. with Paypal, it made a lot of sense as there were lots of synergies created through the vertical integration of both service offerings. but, i was skeptical when a rumour started about potential eBay’s intention to acquire Skype. i thought that it was outside eBay’s core competency. but hey, when you are a fast growing company with $2.6b in cash waiting to be spent, you have to invest and invest and invest.

now the rumour is news because eBay has officially acquired Skype for $2.6b (cash and stock). it could be a very pricey acquisition, but the potential synergies are too great to ignore. you wont be surprised if part of a bidding proces in eBay, you could be conducting a teleconference all over the world, with new integrated eBay features in the Skype’s platform. it will truly change the face of online auction forever. i guess at that time, it would makes more sense for Google to acquire Skype until it released its own GoogleTalk (it could be that Google was losing the bidding battle).

eBay + Skype like the title suggests is indeed a lethal combination. Skype has defined the future of telecommunication industries. and those who have read Yergin’s Commanding Heights know that the nature of the industry in commanding great influence and power over daily lives. perhaps, the convenience of picking up a handset is still a barrier for the Skype’s uptake but the standardisation of protocols and the realisation by developers on the need of open source platform can only improve the integration and interoperability of this great technology. afterall, more and more people have computers esp laptop with ADSL connections as constant fixtures in their daily lives.

this is really exciting!!

google Talk

2005
08.26

in the past three days, i have received invites to use google Talk. ok people… i already have it, not as a stand-alone chat program but integrated with my Trillian pro (using jabber plugin). i have problem connecting to the server for unknown reason. i kept disconnecting and reconnecting. that might be the reason why you will not see me online.

anyway…i heard the news about google talk last week when it was still a rumour. visiting talk.google.com didnt yield anything. but three days ago, when it was officially released, the subdomain came to live. i havent downloaded the stand alone software as i dont see the need to. it can be integrated with my Trillian using the jabber plugin. it’s not working exactly the way you want it to be, but it has stabilised in the past hour or so. so im quite happy about it.

this is definitely part of the google’s campaign against the aggressive IM players like MSN or Yahoo. before you know it, ur whole pc will run a Google OS (you heard it here first!). but competition can only bring benefits to end-consumers. we can only encourage it! So start downloading your google IM, to show the rest of the players that their lock-in consumer approach will no longer work. for open source is here to stay!
